A venture between winemaker Luke Houlihan and viticulturist Greg Dunnett. Luke was formerly winemaker at Yarra Ridge and Long Gully Estate, and Greg owns Valley Farm Vineyard. The pinot noir has had several distinguished purchasers over the years, and there has never been any doubt about the quality of the fruit from the dry-grown vines. That said, it's been an auto da fe since 2007; the first vintage went down the drain due to smoke taint, the same fate befalling the '09 vintage, including the chardonnay, while the micro-quantities of Heathcote syrah (from the highly regarded Greenstone Vineyard) were only made in '07 (70 dozen) and '09 (130 dozen).
2008 Trellis Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
Very good depth to the crimson-purple hue; a very well-made wine, protecting the high quality fruit; the bouquet is clean and fragrant, spiced plum fruit to the fore, the beautifully proportioned palate ending with some forest floor tannins.
94 points, drink to 2014, $40, Screwcap, 13.5% alc
