Overview

As a wine region, Mount Benson offers wines with distinctive terroir. The rugged Limestone coast, coupled with the harsh maritime elements, creates cool climate wines particular to this region which many people refer to as "terra rossa by the sea". Most of the region is planted with red grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the most common red varieties and this is indicative of the success with which they grown in this region. Merlot, Cabernet France, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Petit Verdot are also found here, but it is the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that are worth focussing on if wanting to try the stars of this region.

When it comes to white varieties, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the most commonly planted. Chardonnay from this region tends to have delicious mineral qualities, indicative of the limestone that it is grown in. Sauvignon Blanc is a variety that is growing particularly well here as well.

Lying between between the fishing village of Robe and Kingston (known for it's giant Lobster) the drive along this coast is spectacular. Dropping in to any of the 20 cellar doors in this small region is well worth the effort.
