History
The Barossa Valley is one of the oldest wine growing regions in Australia. Founded by hard working families from England and Prussia during the mid 1800's, it soon established itself as one of the premier wine regions in Australia. These families worked tirelessly, many six days a week from dawn until dusk, to create a businesses that would continue to provide for future descendants.
The agricultural layout of the valley was influenced by these original founders, with the wine making traditions of their homelands forming the way wine would be produced for many years to come. With more than 200 heritage listed building in the area, it is obvious to the wine tourist that this is a region with strong links to history and a pride of heritage.
Climate
The Barossa Valley's floor is hot and dry and received very little rainfall. The soil suits dark reds, particularly Shiraz and Grenache. Research is currently underway to determine the major differences in soil types within the region, which in turn will create an understanding of the way in which terroir is expressed.
Wine Varieties
There are over 700 grape growers in the Barossa Valley with the most commonly produced wine being Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Riesling and Chardonnay.
The Barossa is home to some of the world’s oldest Shiraz vines The existence of these vines is quite amazing especially considering the prevalence of Phyloxerra throughout the world.
The wine tourist
An hour's drive north of Adelaide, the Barossa is extremely popular as a wine tourist destination. WIth over 150 cellar doors,
